Dodo Chaplet was a companion of the Doctor near the end of his first incarnation. He took to her within seconds of their first encounter, citing her physical similarity to his granddaughter. She was perhaps most notable for being the first female since Susan to have travelled alone with the Doctor, and the first female human to do so.

She had limited contact with other companions, only spending significant time with Steven Taylor. Dodo met and hit it off with Polly briefly in 1965's London, and was with her when Polly first encountered Ben Jackson. Neither Ben nor Polly had yet seen the TARDIS when Dodo chose to stop travelling with the Doctor, sending word of her decision to leave him via Polly.

After a brief travelling period, she and the Doctor arrived in 1966 London and discovered WOTAN and its War Machines, where WOTAN conditioned her to betray the Doctor. The Doctor broke her conditioning, and sent Dodo to the country to recuperate, but Dodo never returned. She sent her TARDIS key back with Polly, saying that she had decided to stay in London and that was the last that was seen of her.

Dodo was very inconsistent in this story, going from scared to devil-may-care to fits of giggles to cunning to kind and caring. It was hard to keep up with her moods. She was played well enough but the writing for the character was all over the place.

You could put that down to them trying to find the character, I suppose. She was still pretty new at this point. I don't think it helped her in the slightest though. It made her appear whimsical and childlike.

With appearances like this she never really stood a chance, did she? It's not that she didn't perform well, she was just written pretty badly.

Also, I read during my info search last night about this episode that Dodo was intended to have a different outfit and hairstyle in every story as a running joke, but they couldn't do the hair thing because she cut it all off before filming started. Perhaps a random fact, but not really specific to this story and I wanted to share.

I think Dodo is great, but this story isn't a great representation for her character. As PP says, she is a bit of a mixed bag in this and at times it can become annoying.

I've never been very keen on Dodo, though that's the way she was written, not any reflection on the performance.  It seems as if, after having Susan and Vicki, they were more or less doing the young girl companion by numbers with her.

Having her laugh and giggle her way through it took away some of the potential atmosphere of the story, I thought. We are meant to be believing that they are in the middle of some seriously life threatening tasks but yet the one who is meant to be (according to form) terrified and screaming keeps seeing it as a joke. It doesn't help.

I found her a little grating at times. She wasn't awful, but based on this story I'm not overly keen on the character.

She's much better in others, though I did like her in this one, too. I think the character gets an unfair ride in fandom, but I still fail to see why. She was written or acted no worse than any of the more popular ones from the era.

I'd agree with this. She doesn't come over well in this story. It's not the whole picture, but it could be enough to put people off.

I like Dodo. I didn't have any issues with her in this story. I know she wasn't taking it all that seriously, but I can understand why. Seeing it all as a threat could be hard for anyone, especially as there was little information about what they were doing. It all seemed like a game to her, which is understandable.
