The first and last ones I've never seen before. The costumes really were very good. That rarely comes across in black and white and of course even less so when the episode is missing.

It would have looked brilliant in colour. I wish we could see more.

The third one is brilliant. I've never seen that one before. I've seen some fan recolourations of pictures from this story, but most aren't very good and none catch just how good the story looked.

This is definitely one, like Marco Polo, that would have benefited from being in colour.

I bet this would have looked brilliant had it been in colour. You can never fully appreciate the effort that goes into the sets and costumes with black and white. On the other hand I think black and white hid a lot of the not so great stuff too, so it's a double edged sword, really.

Oh my god Karen, you can't just ask someone why they're white!

This is perhaps a silly question, so sorry for that. I've read that many of the stories that were found after being thought lost were re-recordings that people made and such. So, were these stories filmed in colour but the recordings are black and white because most people didn't have colour TV when recording, or were they actually made in black and white? And ones that were made to sell abroad, what I was reading was something about negatives being made for other countries and then found there years later. Does negative mean black and white in this instance? I don't know much about TV production now, let alone 50 years ago.
I'm reading it and it feels like the question doesn't make sense, but I don't know how else to ask it.

Not a silly question at all, and it's quite clear what you're asking. Up to and including 1969, the show was made in black and white, although colour stills taken on the set exist for some of them. In 1970, it started to be made in colour, but some episodes could only be found in b/w copies. That's because the BBC originals were lost, and the surviving copies were for countries that didn't have colour TV at that stage. The most extreme example of that was the 1971 story The Mind of Evil, which is completely b/w. For DVD release, the episodes that should be colour are digitally recoloured, but the ones made in b/w are released that way. Although some (like The Celestial Toymaker) might be better in colour, others made a virtue of the monochrome and look great like that.
Negative is a stage in non-digital photography, either still or moving. The original photo has its colours reversed and has to be converted to the "positive" image of the final photo. This applies both to b/w and colour.

Whoever did the costumes on this story did an amazing job. They look great in black and white but in colour they look fantastic.

That's Daphne Dare. There's a feature about her on one of the DVDs. She did the costumes from the second story right through to The Faceless Ones.
