Is he a Timelord?

The Doctor is familiar with him and they seem to share some sort of history. The Doctor talks about him as though he is a god, but at this point they didn't even know who or what the Doctor was and Gallifrey was just a twinkle in the eye of the writers and so overlooking the odd description of him it isn't a huge leap of logic, so is it fair to retroactively call this guy a Timelord?

Also, he is awesome.

I think the Doctor's description could put him in the Timelord bracket. He more or less says that he regenerates and can live for thousands of years. Even before I watched I'd always assumed that he was.

Depending on whether you consider the books and audios canon then no, he definitely isn't a Timelord. If you don't, then I'd say it's not an unreasonable assumption to come to and it's one I know that has been debated many times. I like to think he is.

On a character level though, I think the Toymaker is brilliant and I would love to see him return. Absolutely love it. I think they could really do something brilliant with his character and world.

I have seen it suggested somewhere that he's a Guardian, though neither the White or Black.  Whatever, he's definitely someone who needs to be brought back.

I'd like to see him again, but I would worry that if they brought him back in todays culture they'd have the Doctor fighting for his life through a game of Angry Birds or something. I wouldn't want his world to have become all tech filled. I like the simplicity of the games they played, I just think they needed better games and to make them more scary.

Has he been in the show? The Doctor kept saying to his companions that he knew him and there was mention of a previous meeting, so was this in the show in another story, or was it just a reference to the Doctor's past?

No, it was just part of the Doctor's mysterious past.  He's only appeared once, and a planned return in the 80s was cancelled, due to the troubles the show was having then.

I've read previously that the intention was initially to have him as a rogue member of the Doctors race, though I think even in implication it's a little fuzzy. I don't mind the Doctors speech being retconned if they ever wanted to bring him back as a Timelord. I'd rather him than the Master.

I wasn't sure what to expect with the Toymaker. I knew a bit about the story and his role, but if the actor doesn't do a good job bringing it to life it doesn't matter how good the character is. Fortunately, both were great here and like many others I would love to see a return.

Me too. The Master in the new series has never worked for me. He's just not as good as when he was in the classic stories, though I think if Derek Jacobi had longer in the role he'd have done a great job.

I think there is a lot of mileage in this character and I would love to see him come back for a rematch. Michael Gough played him so well in this story and he had a great interaction with Hartnell (when he was around). They really played well of each other.

A great villain played by a great actor, but at times poorly written, I thought.
