I give this episode a 3. I'm not overly keen on it but I don't dislike it. I really really love the ending though!

Three from me too.  Some excellent aspects, such as the child and Clara's background, but quite a bit didn't make sense to me.

3 from me too.  Some beautiful CGI, awesome 11 speech and Clara was good too.  Too much droning/singing for me thou, and could have maybe done with going through another script edit before filming as the pacing was off imo.

I wouldn't normally do this without a rewatch, but I'm giving it a 2. I was bored and for a time pretty confused. Also, as Sandi says, a bit too much singing for my liking.

3/5 from me. Not a bad story but nothing great either. From the trailer I expected it would be much better than it actually was and I think I was expecting something vastly different, which may be why I wasn't so taken with it. The episode seemed a bit like padding to fill a gap, and I don't like that.

I actually quite liked this one. It's not the best story we have had this season, but it stood out as one of the better ones.

When I initially watched this I would have given it a 2, perhaps even a one, because I just wasn't feeling it (something I have to admit happened with most of 7b), but with a few rewatches under my belt I feel like it has improved and so went with a 4.

Giving this one a four as well. There was nothing majorly wrong with it, but there were a few things I wasn't so keen on. The whole story felt really small scale and I think it would have been nice to see a familiar alien on the planet (very picky negative, but still). Overall I quite liked it though.

This is the worst piece of Doctor Who I have seen in quite some time. I have watched it a couple of times and I vow I am never going to put myself through this again. The plot was threadbare and doesn't really hold up to any serious analysis; what was the problem in the first place?  what happens to the planet now the sun has gone? why did the Doctor look on casually when Clara was forced to give away the ring? Rumour has it that this was a quick script, brought together at the last moment. I can well believe this to be true.

The big problem this episode throws up is this; in a mini-series of 7 episodes, every episode needs to be right on the money. This was so far short of what is acceptable it actually made me question whether it was me, and whether I was stuck in the past, wanting action/adventure stories instead of this.

I hate being this negative about an episode. It gives me no pleasure and I hate being on this side of the discussion. I can generally find something. I like the Twin Dilemma for goodness sakes! But this was not up to the standard I expect and a criminal waste of Matt Smith's talents.

Do you really think it's that bad? I know it wasn't the greatest story, but the worst? I can think of at least ten from NuWho alone that are worse. The whole thing was pointless, I agree, but there were some genuinly good bits I thought.

It's actually really odd to see you being so negative about anything, let alone a DW story

It was enjoyable enough but it was a total filler episode with not a lot of plot or point to it. I've given it a three, though it's a low three.

First, I take that as a huge compliment Smiley And honestly, you have no idea how much it really pains me to do it. But sadly, this was one of the rare occasions where I felt I was being short changed by the production team. I didn't feel there was any drive to produce the best Doctor Who possible. I got the feeling of "that will do". The story just didn't work on any level for me and normally I am a-buzz with ideas and theories after watching the show. After this one, I put on Logopolis and hoped it would dull the pain.

I must stress, I am very much speaking for myself here, I don't seek to denigrate those who enjoyed it and I am glad that other people got something out of it. But the thing that really depresses me, more than anything, is that it wasn't the only time I felt like this during series 7b.

I hope it didn't seem like I was putting you down for you opinion. I have no issue with you not liking it, I was just surprised by how strongly you seemed to not enjoy it.

As for the 7b issue, it's something I have heard a lot of people say and while for the most part I enjoyed it, it was nowhere near as high quality as the first five episodes.

Not at all Smiley One of the things I love about this forum is the way we respect each others (often totally opposite) views - and I genuinely took it as a huge compliment that I come across as upbeat Smiley

My theory on why the series wasn't up to scratch is this: I really don't think the mid-series break did the show any favours at all. With a run of 13 stories the narrative and tone of the series gets established. The Ponds leaving in 'Angels take Manhattan' seemed like the end of a series and 'Bells' had to restart from scratch (with new titles, new music and new TARDIS interior). Therefore with the series going from 13 stories to 8 stories, the margin of error for bad stories is much less. I'm not sure I'd have hated this quite so much if it had been in the longer season. I also think that I view this in the context of the rest of the 8 stories where, frankly, there were only 3 that were of acceptable quality. That relatively low success rate is just not acceptable, especially given the amazing talent of Matt Smith and Steven Moffat

I haven't had a chance to rewatch this episode yet (although I recall finding it rather poor) but I just wanted to say you absolutely hit the nail on the head with this.

Wharraloadofoldshit!

I wasn't expecting this episode to be so bad. The title had such a classic feel to it and sounded really cool and I thought we would be getting something awesome, but I have watched it about 4 times now and I am still none the wiser as to it's point in the season. The whole thing just sits there like a clunker with no real purpose. It did nothing to move along the season, it had a barely there plot which makes it hard to like it even as a standalone and some of the dialogue was just shocking. The only thing it was good for was setting up a bit of back story for Clara, but that was quickly left alone and never really refered to again for the rest of the season. It was a filler episode to make up the numbers, but it had no real redeeming qualities.
