I agree.  Much as I enjoy many of the "sci-fi historicals", I love seeing the Doctor and companions simply dealing with the issues of a historical period, as in Marco Polo, The Aztecs and The Romans.  Actually, the closest thing in the new era (though not completely pure historical) was probably the SJA Lost in Time.
