Following on from PP's question about pure historicals, which is your favourite?

I was tempted to go with Marco Polo, but it's difficult to judge a story exactly on a reconstruction, so I've chosen The Aztecs. The first time the issue of changing history came up, a wonderful story for Barbara, and the Doctor's only romantic subplot of the classic era.

I think I would agree with The Aztecs. I liked John Ringham's performance in this, as well. He was in another story too (I can't remember which one), but I mainly remember him as Penny's father in the sitcom Just Good Friends.

It's not the most popular of stories but I went with The Myth Makers, purely because it covers an era that I have a very keen interest in and despite it's popularity (or lack of) in fandom, I think it's pretty great. I'm a history lover of all kinds though and I really like all those stories.

Marco Polo, The Romans and the Aztecs were the main contenders for me, but in the end I went with The Romans.

I don't know if it is within the spirit of the poll, but the book and the audio adventures of the Myth Makers are absolutely superb! I went for it despite it being a missing story. Perversely, my favourite single episode is An Unearthly Child... But I stop liking it when it becomes historical lol

I know this is a big claim, but I have read and seen a lot of Sci-Fi in my time and, in my humble opinion, the first episode of An Unearthly Child is the greatest single piece of science fiction that I have ever seen. I only wish I could have seen it fresh in 1963. It must have been amazing (especially given all of the TV that had gone before)

It was amazing. Then we saw it again the following Saturday, of course

I'm sure I heard that, and then when it got scrapped they quickly wrote the caveman stuff
