There's a lot of talk that the next series will only be 12 episodes? Anyone know if it's true and where it came from? I can't see anything official but it seems to just be a given now.

I've seen nothing official as such, but the Radio Times have said it is expected to be 12 episodes - I know some people take what they say to be close to official. It's in this article: http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2013-06-03/doctor-who-matt-smith-replacement-could-be-announced-next-month

But even they seem to have plucked it out of thin air without anything to back up their reasoning. It seems a bit of a random move

From what I can gather, BBC Worldwide sell the show in chunks of 14 to countries around the world. Because of the extra episode for the anniversary, one has to be taken from next year in order to not mess with contracts and whatnot. May be wrong, but that's what I've read on the subject.

While that seems plausable enough, it would mean selling this years Christmas Special along with next years series, which seems like an odd cut, what with the regen and change of Doctors.

I know it's only a cut of one episode (if it's even true), but I really hope they don't. The seasons don't feel long enough as it is so I'd hate to end up getting less.

I'm with TC. I don't want any cuts and I don't see any reason why there should be.

There are a number of rumours kicking around about the BBC wanting to cut the number of episodes of Doctor Who made. Partly to do with budget and accounting (13 series doesn't fit neatly into the BBC accounting/sales model) and partly to make the mid-series break more logical (6/6 split).

I am actually more worried about the mid-series break than a drop of one story. I think the mid-series break kills the momentum (series 7) and also means that any subtle story arcs need hammering in rather than subtly weaving in and out of the stories (series 6). Would much sooner see a return to the series 1-5 model of a straight run of stories.

Completely agree with you. I think the break is really what puts more a downer on S7 in my head. Splitting the show in half makes the weaker episodes stand out more as being so because you're getting less Who/great eps to focus on and enjoy.

I think the show suffers from the split also and I would like to see a return to a full season run. We're getting a season every 18 months or so now and that's not good. Giving the season a cut as well, when it makes so much money for the BBC, seems illogical.
