Hot off the press, announced 20 minutes ago...
The BBC has announced a raft of programmes to mark the 50th anniversary of the first episode of Doctor Who.
A 75-minute special called The Day Of The Doctor will star the soon-to-leave Matt Smith and David Tennant.
Smith said: "Hope you all enjoy. There's lots more coming your way."
Other highlights include a BBC Two lecture by Professor Brian Cox on the science behind the hit show and the drama An Adventure In Space and Time, written by Mark Gatiss.
The one-off programme stars David Bradley, of the Harry Potter films, as William Hartnell - who was the first Doctor in 1963. Restored episodes
BBC Four will introduce new audiences to Hartnell, with a re-run of the first ever story. The four episodes are being shown in a restored format, not previously broadcast in the UK.
BBC Two's flagship arts programme The Culture Show is to present Me, You and Doctor Who, with lifelong fan Matthew Sweet exploring the cultural significance of the BBC's longest running TV drama.
A 90-minute documentary on BBC Radio 2 will ask "Who Is The Doctor?" - using newly-recorded interviews and exclusive archive material to find an answer - while BBC Three will be home to several commissions. A scene from The Day of the Doctor The anniversary episode sees the return of the Daleks
For those less familiar with the show, Doctor Who: The Ultimate Guide will provide a handy primer.
Danny Cohen, Director BBC Television said: "It's an astonishing achievement for a drama to reach its 50th anniversary.
"I'd like to thank every person - on both sides of the camera - who has been involved with its creative journey over so many years."
Smith has already started filming his final scenes as the Doctor, which are due to air in this year's Christmas episode. His replacement, Scots actor Peter Capaldi, was announced in August.
Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer on Doctor Who said: "50 years has turned Doctor Who from a television show into a cultural landmark. Personally I can't wait to see what it becomes after a hundred."

It's spread over quite a few channels and radio though. I want to know what the 'several commissions' on BBC3 will be.

Well that sounds better than what I was expecting. However I don't think they were meant to reveal the title because the original BBC article has now been ammended

I think it was possibly supposed to be embargoed til midnight because the page disappeared & was returning a 404. It's now back & I noticed a lot of activity from websites around midnight which is when the poster appeared (I've started another thread for the pic/poster so you can discuss that there).

Not an actual programme, but the BBC have announced that there will be 'stings' for TDOTD either side of new show Atlantis.

Tickets go on sale today for anyone who want to see the anniversary episode in 3D at the cinema. If you want to find out if your local cinema is showing it check HERE - this page also tells you which countries are getting a simultaneous TV broadcast with the UK screening.

There's nowhere easy to get to from me. Seeing it in 3D on a big screen would be awesome, of course, but I think Doctor Who belongs on the TV in my living room anyway.

My local cinema doesn't seem to be showing it either, though I always planned to watch it from the comfort of my sofa - not a huge fan of 3D.

Apparently new cinemas have been added to the list of those that are showing it so be sure to check the link again. My local cinema is now showing it - I'm still watching at home though.
