There's a little reference in this story to the fandom companion VS assistant debate and what the person travelling with the Doctor should be called, so I was wondering what everyone else thought?

Personally, I call them companions, and whenever someone says assistant it always makes me think automatically of anyone Pre-Rose. I think the waters got muddied a bit with Ten picking up all the waifs and strays, so now the way I work it out is this:
Companions - People who travel long term with the Doctor, either by his request or by not kicking them out when he found they had sneaked in, etc. Such as Barbara, Jo, Ace or Amy for example.
Assistants - People who help out either as a one off or sporadically, so people like Astrid, Adelaide etc, but also encompassing people such as Wilf, River, Mickey and Rory.

I'm fairly sure that assistant started with Liz, and then Jo, who had the official UNIT duties of assisting the Doctor and weren't primarily (or at all, with Liz) travelling companions. On the whole, I prefer companions.
