For me personally I loved Matt Smith from the moment he opened his mouth in The Eleventh Hour, but I know a lot of people didnt really take to him. Now that its been a few months since series 5 finished, and people have had the chance to watch and rewatch him in the role, what are your opinions of him now? Is he living up to expectations or are you dissapointed by his portrayal?

I started a very similar topic a while ago in a different area which I think might feed into this discussion; http://thedoctorinthetardis.freesmfhosting.com/index.php/topic,25.0.html I think MS has the potential to be a very good Doctor. I think he was brought into the show by Moffat as a rough diamond rather than a 'plug in and play' actor such as Ecclestone or DT. But I must confess I love his incarnation. I think he has a real watchable quality and I am feverish with excitement about season 6, which I think is going to blow our collective socks off

Sorry Chris. I'll get the Doc to merge them together Also I agree with everything in that post. For want of a better description, Im glad he is a grower as apposed to a shower. Watching him grow in the role and become better with each episode is brilliant. Its nice to see him gradully become the Doctor completely and make the role his own. One of the reasons I am so excited for the next series is because I think with the experience, Matt will just be even better and exciting to watch. For me, I accepted him as the Doctor far more quickly than I did CE or DT and I think that with his growth in the role he will just keep getting better

It shows - as I suspected - that we are of a similar mind I actually don't think they need to be merged as I think they both ask slightly different questions; we now see a different side to MS in the post Season 5 world and I think that feeds in to his development as well. The Eleventh Hour was so memorable because you could say the raw potential there. To borrow a sporting analogy it was like seeing a promising young cricketer or footballer make their debut - you can imagine how the next few years are going to pan out and it is very exciting

I love Matt Smith. He is my favourite Doctor of all (though that could change after last nights Caves viewing ) I like that Matt is still in the process of becoming the doctor, while at the same time embodying all the characteristics that we love in the character. I didnt think anyone would ever come close to Tennant in the role, but one of the things I love so much about him is that he isnt as polished as Tennant was which makes character development easier, because as he said in TEH, he isnt finished yet. He really is still becoming the Doctor, while at the same time being the very Doctor we know and love

I love Matt in the role (yes I'll say it again he was my first Doctor - but I've since watched others) - the more I see him the more I like him. Can't wait to see where he goes from here.

I hated his casting right up until his conversation with Amelia at the beginning of TEH. I saw his interview on Jonathan Ross the week before and thought he came off as a bit of an arse and was fully prepared to hate him. When he was hanging off of the TARDIS at the beginning I still did, but as soon as he opened his mouth I was won over and he is now joint favourite for me with Troughton

I think he is superb. I really dont get why some people are so negative towards him. He has played the role brilliantly with the material given to him, which lets face it, hasnt always been brilliant. He has the potential to be even better though which is good. Dont want him to peak to early and have people get tired of him

He knocked good old Tom of the top spot pretty early on in the season for me, which wss a weird feeling, lol. DT used to be my second favourite up to s3 or so but he slowly slid down to the lower half by the time the specials aired I absolutely love his Doc, his emotions are far more realistic for me and his bumbling proffessor look suits him perfectly.

11 was 3rd on my list for a looooooooooooong time.
He is now second, between 10 and 9.
He has the potential to be in first place too.

Fully agree apart from that last bit. Matt Smith, along with Daniel Craig & Catherine Tate, has proven me wrong in my pre-judgement, and I'm glad he did. However, he'll never unseat Tristan Farnon as #1.

Catherine Tate turned so many people around. The wave of negativity surrounding her casting compared the amount of love she now receives is massive

For me personally I loved Matt Smith from the moment he opened his mouth in The Eleventh Hour... Same here! He quickly unseated Christopher Eccleston as my favorite doctor, who had unseated Tom Baker (took him a while though). I was really apprehensive after seeing his interviews, but the character of the Doctor is so different from Matt Smith himself it's hard to believe they're the same person sometimes.

I agree and it is well deserved. You can take the best writing in the world but if it isnt played properly it will bomb and she proved to everyone that she could take it all on and do the best job. She was brilliant

It only took a couple of episodes for him to become easily my favourite Doctor since the show returned. I love the fact that it's just obvious as soon as you see him that he's a 900-year-old alien. The very idea of him being a twenty-something guy from Northampton seems absurdly far-fetched. And I'm looking forward to seeing him just get better and better in the next series!

I agree with everything you have said here. I love him and his take on the role. He doesnt just play the character, when you watch him he IS the character.

Agreed, I also like how the god complex isn't so in your face with him. He has doubts about himself which make him a character I can believe and get behind more. Moff said in an interview about Sherlock that he is a charcter who is a man who thinks he is a god, where as the Doctor is a higher being who thinks/tries to be a man. I love that analogy of the 2 different characters

Now that the Christmas episode has come and gone, has anyone changed their mind about Matt's take on the Doctor? Did his performance there make you like his interpretation of the character more or less?
