From DWM:
Russell T Davies has explained that Jo Grant wasn’t the only companion he wanted to bring back in The Sarah Jane Adventures story Death of the Doctor.
“Jo Grant wasn’t always there – the idea of the Doctor came first. But the more we explored the idea of seeing his funeral – his real, genuine, proper funeral, come the day he dies – then it just seemed odd that no one from his past came along”, he says in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine.
“Believe me, if we’d have had the budget, I’d have packed the halls with every single ex-companion, I’d have even found a way to pluck Romana out of E-Space!”
Davies also suggested another appearance by the Doctor is unlikely in Series 5: “It’ll have to be different next year, you’ve got to keep moving on. I wonder…Maybe it’s time we really did The Two Ranis.”
I would have loved to have seen others there. Ian, Romana and Ace probably the most.

Well it would have made sense to use the doctors funeral as a reason to bring everyone but the proverbial kitchen sink back. Shame on the BBC for not providing the budget

Sarah Jane Smith: No.The universe has to move forward. Pain and loss, they define us as much as happiness or love. Whether it's a world, or a relationship. Everything has its time. And everything ends.

It would have been a nice idea. Probably odd that Amy and Rory werent around. Though I suppose they knew he wasnt dead anyway, and were off on The Honeymoon Planet, so...

I think its probably a good thing he only got to use one in the end. He wrote her brilliantly dont get me wrong but I dont like what he said about Barbara and Ian so I think he would have tried to be too radical if he had more to play with

I have to say I'm glad he didn't have the budget for it. All those lovely tender moments with Jo would have been lost for a start, we don't need 10 companions all vying for screen time in a spin off, any emotional impact of their lives after leaving the Doctor would have been lost imo.

One day I shall come back. Yes, I shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties. Just go forward in all your beliefs and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine.

I agree - fitting both the Doctor and Jo in was a squeeze, though it worked. I can't quite understand why Ian and Barbara wouldn't have aged - after all, both SJ and Jo have.
A random open question - do you think the "woman called Dorothy" was Dodo or Ace? I'd guess Ace.

I would say it was Ace. Wasn't Dodo Dorothea?

One word; Adric. Now before i hear howls of derision and the usual 'He's demented - i thought he'd eaten himself to death.' I would like to make the following points. Firstly, he wouldn't have blown the budget. Secondly and of real significance, it would have been an interesting opportunity for the Doctor to confront a companion he knows is going to die. All it would cost is a couple of bottles of 'Just for Men' and a new pair of Alzarian PJs. Think about it...

Especially in a 20 minute episode, instead of an hour.
