An international version of the iPlayer will be launched next year after receiving the approval of the BBC Trust.
John Smith, the chief executive of BBC Worldwide, the BBC's commercial wing, said it would open up the "under-exploited" market for UK shows, such as Doctor Who, he went on to say "Not only will that mean international fans of, for example, Doctor Who can get their fix legitimately [rather than downloading programmes illegally], but it has the potential of opening up a new revenue stream for the entire UK production industry, alongside sales to traditional broadcasters.
The move will mean that advertising could be introduced on to the iPlayer unless BBC Worldwide decides to charge viewers to use the service.
Executives have yet to decide which option will be introduced, but they said the Trust's decision will enable them to raise funds needed after the Government's decision to freeze the licence fee.
It is estimated that global audiences would pay up to $10 for an episode of its most popular shows.

I think you should all have to pay because we in the UK have to, BUT I think more people would be more likely to use the service if its free

Yay, I'm glad they are still planning on pushing this through, I was concerned that it would be something they might have to cut due to pressure from the present government  I assume they will prob go the ad route as it's the general accepted rule abroad, but I'd rather they stuck to charging so it can be run in a similar vein to the Licence Fee, otherwise they will be facing problems when advertisers want to stick their oar in, lol. |

I agree with Exterminate. It should be paid for, but at the same time it could make it fail and then everyone will lose out. If it has ads on though I can see a backlash in the UK

If people cause a fuss about stuff like that, its just because they can and like to. It makes no difference if its free with adverts or not really.

I'm against the ads idea mainly because once people start paying big money and competing for time slots, they start having a say in how things are done. Which isn't how the BBC is run  |

It is one thing to pay $2.99 for one episode of a show, like on iTunes. It is another thing entirely to pay $10 for one episode. I have no issues with the concept of paying, but not $10 for one episode! So lets hope that when they say 'up to $10', it's actually less than that!

Doctor Who will be made available to fans outside the UK armed with an iPad from later this year, as the BBC begins the process of introducing its international iPlayer to overseas audiences.
Diehard BBC fans living in western Europe will have to pay somewhere under $10 (£6) a month – the fee is still to be decided – in return for a mix of contemporary and archive content on the Apple tablet, all of which will be in English.
Jana Bennett – the former BBC Vision director now working at the corporation's commerical arm, BBC Worldwide, as its president of worldwide networks and global iPlayer – will tell the Banff World Television Festival on Tuesday that the international version of the online video player will "a different proposition" from its British equivalent, which showcases recent catch-up content only.
