The Radio times polled over 3000 people to find out who the greatest companions of the Doctor are, and though I agree with only a few of the placings in the positions they hold, its an interesting list nonetheless

1.Rose Tyler (Billie Piper)
2.Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen)
3.Donna Noble (Catherine Tate)
4.K-9 (John Leeson/David Brierley)
5.Amy Pond (Karen Gillan)
6.Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman)
7.Ace (Sophie Aldred)
8.Leela (Louise Jameson)
9.Jo Grant (Katy Manning)
10.Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart (Nicholas Courtney)
11.Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman)
12.Jamie McCrimmon (Frazer Hines)
13.Romana II (Lalla Ward)
14.Tegan Jovanka (Janet Fielding)
15.Wilfred Mott (Bernard Cribbins)
16.Peri Brown (Nicola Bryant)
17.River Song (Alex Kingston)
18.Harry Sullivan (Ian Marter)
19.Polly (Anneke Wills)
20.Turlough (Mark Strickson)

Some shocking placings on that list if you ask me. A lot from the top should be lower, and a lot from the bottom should be higher

So this is what Sleekit etc were pissing themselves over on twitter then.

Well, let's see, shall we?

1.Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) Peri Brown (Nicola Bryant)
2.Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen)
3.Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) Ace (Sophie Aldred)
4.K-9 (John Leeson/David Brierley) Donna Noble (Catherine Tate)
5.Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart (Nicholas Courtney)
6.Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) Victoria Waterfield (Deborah Watling)
7.Ace (Sophie Aldred) Wilfred Mott (Bernard Cribbins)
8.Leela (Louise Jameson)
9.Jo Grant (Katy Manning)
10.Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart (Nicholas Courtney) Romanadvoratrelundar (Mary Tamm)
11.Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) Susan Foreman (Carole Ann Ford)
12.Jamie McCrimmon (Frazer Hines)
13.Romana II (Lalla Ward) Nyssa of Traken (Sarah Sutton)
14.Tegan Jovanka (Janet Fielding) Harry Sullivan (Ian Marter)
15.Wilfred Mott (Bernard Cribbins) Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman)
16.Peri Brown (Nicola Bryant) Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill)
17.River Song (Alex Kingston)
18.Harry Sullivan (Ian Marter) Sgt John Benton (John Levine)
19.Polly (Anneke Wills) Liz Shaw (Caroline John)
20.Turlough (Mark Strickson) Adric (Matthew Waterhouse)

Of course, that's just my opinion, and I'm sure Nu-Who fans will gasp at the removal of Rose, Martha & Amy from the list. Personally, I'd put K-9 on it before any of them.  Grin

Could we really consider River a companion, technically she's not one Yet

I'm ok with her being on there - don't think she could ever really be classed as a companion - but she's decent I think.

I think she can be classed as a companion now. She has travelled with the Doctor and assisted him on his adventures. I think it's fair. Plus we know there are more to come. It's
not chronological for us but it's all the same isn't it

Yeah, I didn't word that right earlier - what I was trying to get at is that with River it appears she's something beyond just being classed as a companion, but only time(y wimey) will tell!

I definitely prefer thefifthdoctor's list to the original one, though mine (if I had one) probably wouldn't be quite the same.  I definitely prefer Romana I to II.  I'd probably include Barbara Wright and Zoe Heriot somewhere.

I'm quite limited in what I've seen of The Hartnell Years, so don't have much to go by for her, or indeed, Ian - although I did include Susan in my list.

EDIT: Ladies & gents, turns out this was my 300th post!! Woop!

I think TFDs order is pretty much spot on. I'd probably swap Donna and Ace around. Other than that I think it's all in place

Also, TFD you really have to get stuck into Hartnell. Ian and Barbara are amazing and some of his stories are among the best
