There seems to be a spurt of news coming out about the book and magazine world of Doctor Who. This thread has been merged from another discussion about book releases and will have all the latest headlines and little titbits that perhaps don't warrant a thread of their own but are of interest nonetheless Smiley

The DW BBC Books Twitter feed have just announced that:

... legendary sci-fi author Alastair Reynolds will be writing a Third Doctor novel for us for 2013.

Reynolds himself has also written about it on his blog:

And I'm now pleased to announce that in 2013, in the fiftieth anniversary year of Doctor Who, BBC Books will be publishing HARVEST OF TIME, an original science fiction novel featuring the Third Doctor, his companion Jo Grant, and arch-enemy The Master.

He goes on to discuss the show & his reasons for choosing the Third Doctor. You can read it HERE

Might be worth bookmarking that blog as well as he says he will be revealing more over the coming year.

A limited edition collection of celebrities' childhood memories of Doctor Who has gone on sale online.
Behind the Sofa features writing by over 100 famous fans of the show including Charlie Brooker, Emma Freud, Jonathan Ross, Josie Long, Michael Grade, Rufus Hound, Richard Herring and Stephen Merchant, as well as Doctor Who writer Neil Gaiman and former stars Hugh Bonneville and Tracy Ann Oberman.

Advance orders are now being taken for the first edition run of 300 books, compiled by author Steve Berry to raise money for Alzheimer's Research UK, and featuring original illustrations to accompany the stars' Who memories.

The book can be pre-ordered for £14.99 and is also available as a PDF ebook priced £4.99 and in a number of special edition packs named after Who monsters.

Fans who buy the Ogron package, at £19.99, will have heir names added to the list of donors in the book, while the Slitheen package, priced £39.99, also includes a signed print of one of ten illustrations by artist Ben Morris, a contributor to Doctor Who Magazine and Doctor Who Adventures.

For £199.99, companies can purchase the Zygon package which will see their logo or a sponsor's message appear in the book, while the most committed (and wealthiest) Doctor Who fans can indulge in the Morbius package which, for £999.99, allows them to write their own 300-word memory of the show for inclusion in Behind the Sofa.

If it's already written, how can they sell writing and advertising space in it? It would mean that essentially each time it's republished it's a new volume, which would sort of take away the appeal of buying a first edition.

Who is Michael E. Briant?: A Memoir by the Doctor Who Director

Michael E. Briant directed numerous episodes of classic TV series throughout the 1970s such as Blake’s 7, Secret Army, Warship and most famously Doctor Who.

Many of his Doctor Who stories (The Sea Devils, The Green Death and Robots of Death) are regarded as all-time greats by fans of the series.

Briant reminisces about his career, including his early years on Doctor Who in the Sixties, while he was working his way up in the TV profession, and William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton were at the TARDIS controls.

A new original Second Doctor novel has been announced for release in August called Wheel of Ice. No more information than that at the moment.

Ice Warriors come to mind immediately, but they only just released a new Ice Warriors book so it's probably not that.

I hate to sound bitter, but this sounds like a total cash in. I don't think I've ever even heard of him and he must have directed more besides Doctor Who, so why use the show to sell more books?

I was sure I'd put this here. Don't think it's worth a new thread but here is the info.

Many Doctor Who fans love to collect things whether it’s old episodes, books, scripts, replica costumes or used underwear; they’ll collect it to the very end.

Andy X. Cable used to have a website which drew well over two million hits in just a week and his love for Doctor Who couldn’t have been stronger, but when his collection was cruelly taken away he bounced back and started a new collection.

Armed only with his little black book and a small blue pen he’d got from Argos he began listing and cataloguing Doctor Who related road signs and now his collection, which he’s spent very nearly seven months working on, is presented here in what he hopes will be the first of several volumes.

His passion will become your passion in this genuine and thrilling fanatical page-turner.

I don't know whether this has been put anywhere else (and apologies for the duplication if it has been) but while buying my 50th anniversary calendar I came across the cover of the 2013 Doctor Who annual...

It is available on pre-order http://www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-Official-Annual-2013/dp/1405908440/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1341480633&sr=8-1

The first Children's Author will be announced on the Official Doctor Who Facebook Page on Monday 7th January 2013. The first eshort of the series will then be released on Wednesday 23rd January 2013 priced £1.99, with a paperback version featuring all the stories being released in November, priced £7.99.

The BBC Worldwide Youtube Channel, which features many Doctor Who clips, will also promote the eshorts with a  promotional video of the author each month, starting on Firday 11th January 2013.

Penguin Children's publisher, Juliet Matthews, expressed her delight of the series saying: "Penguin Children's has been the proud home of children's Doctor Who publishing for eight years and to be part of the 50th anniversary is incredibly exciting.

"We are delighted to have eleven sensational children's authors involved in the series, all bringing an individual style, imagination and interpretation to their e-short tribute to the Doctor. This is a who's who of children's fiction coming together to celebrate the much-loved Doctor Who."
