Tenure: 1970-1974
Stories: 24
Episodes: 128
Companions:Liz, Jo, Sarah Jane

Despite his now-and-then arrogance, the Third Doctor genuinely cared for his companions in a paternal fashion, and even held a thinly-veiled but grudging admiration for his nemesis, the Master, and for UNIT's leader, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, with whom he eventually became friends. In fact, even when his much resented exile was lifted, the highly moral and dashing Third Doctor continued to help UNIT protect the Earth from all manner of alien threats.

In general, this incarnation of the Doctor was more physically daring than the previous two, and was the first to confront an enemy physically if cornered (both of his previous incarnations would nearly always attempt to dodge, flee or negotiate rather than attack). This often took the form of quick strikes, with the occasional joint lock or throw - usually enough to get himself and anyone accompanying him out of immediate danger - but usually not to the extent of a brawl, in keeping with the Doctor's non-violent nature. He would only use his fighting skills if he had no alternative, and even then generally disarmed his opponents rather than knock them unconscious. Indeed, his martial prowess was such that a single, sudden strike was usually enough to halt whatever threatened him, and at one point he reminded Captain Yates (physically as well as verbally) that Yates would have a difficult time removing him from somewhere when he did not want to be removed.

The Third Doctor was the very first one I saw and although I wasnt of that era I was immediately hooked. I loved the relationships he shared with Jo and Sarah Jane (and pretty much everyone else) and his stories and adventures always excited me. He doesnt get the respect that he deserves but the Third Doctor, as far as I am concerned, is one of the very best

I absolutely adore Jon Pertwee's Doctor. There is still a fair amount of his episodes that I am yet to see but I have loved his take on the role in every story. Such a brilliant actor and a fantastic Doctor. I loved his relationship with his companions too, especially Jo. Really brilliant.

I have seen two Third Doctor stories (my granny got mixed up buying me DVD's in town) but I have to say I fell in love instantly. I expected to dislike old doctors and stories but this Doctor was amazing and even though I have only seen 9,10 and 11 otherwise, those two stories I saw made Three my second favourite Doctor. I think thats testament to how great he was and I cant wait to see even more Smiley

This guy was MY DOCTOR. I remember I cried my eyes out when I watched Patrick Troughton change into him but Pertwee very quickly won me round. And an absolute gent in real life - did some amazing stuff for fans behind the scenes too.

For the time/budget some brillant/fun stories. Probably the ones I remember with the most affection. The guy had class Cool

Sarah Jane Smith: No.The universe has to move forward. Pain and loss, they define us as much as happiness or love. Whether it's a world, or a relationship. Everything has its time. And everything ends.

I love the Third Doctor.  His relationship with the Master was fascinating, and I loved the pseudo-father/daughter relationships he had with his companions, especially Jo.  Overall, I think they got the Unit stories and time-travelling stories pretty well balanced.

I absolutely agree with everything Mandy has said. Jon Pertwee remains the most underrated Doctor. He was everything I wanted in a Time Lord. He had the dignity but yet he mixed in a sense of child-like fun. You could absolutely believe that he was an omniscient entity and yet could portray compassion and caring like no other actor who has held the role.

Off screen, he clearly relished being the Doctor. Not for him the pretensions of an actor who wanted to avoid typecasting. He knew that his fans loved him and he respected the role (very much in the way that David Tennant has done). I had the privilege of meeting him as a 10 year old and he was everything that I could have hoped for. He was as kind and dignified in real life as he was as the Doctor.

These are the reasons that I voted for him as my all time favourite Doctor. I love every incarnation for one reason or another. But Jon Pertwee, he was very very special.

I think this is spot on. Though I have been limited in what I have seen of the Third Doctor (as I mentioned above), what I did see I thought was brilliant. I sat down to watch him totally expecting to really dislike the classics but I thought his Doctor was brilliant and his pairing with Jo Grant was an inspired bit of casting. He has a way of easing the tension of some of the more serious moments with these bizarre comedic moments but instead of seeming out of place, it all totally fit together. I can't wait to get more and see how he changes and evolves throughout his run

I really like Pertwee. He's probably my second favorite Doctor and I don't know why. Ever since I saw a random clip of his regeneration on YouTube I took an immediate shine to him. He's got a young old face to go with his young-old Time Lord persona. Serious yet fun loving and more of a mentor-father to his companions. He's also oddly enough, the only Doctor I find kind of sexy. It's a strange and confusing thing. I mean obviously Tennant's really attractive, but there's something about Pertwee... That young-old face. Plus he's such a dashing Bond-esque guy.

He never gets the love he deserves, if you ask me. Coming in and taking over from Troughton must have been a tall order and I don't think there has ever been a Doctor, before or since, who loved the role quite as much. He absolutely lived and breathed it, right up until his death. But on top of that, he was bloody brilliant at it. He had to come in to a show that had seen huge budget cuts as well as share the screen with an even larger recurring supporting cast and still managed to keep all eyes on himself. Judging by some of the DVD extras and stuff in various books, the BBC really didn't value him as it should have, expecially considering how much he turned the show around and put the viewing figures back up to heights they hadn't seen in years. Definately one of my favourites. Top 3 for sure.
