Tenure: 1981-1984 Stories: 20 Episodes: 69 Companions: Adric, Nyssa, Tegan, Turlough, Kamelion, PeriThe Fifth Doctor was far more vulnerable, sensitive, and reserved than his previous incarnations, and often reacted to situations rather than initiating them. Frequently, he made decisions by flipping a coin. Unlike his more authoritative predecessors, he treated his young companions as parts of a team, and often willingly participated in situations under the leadership of someone else who had the strong command presence that he apparently lacked. However, the Fifth Doctor's boyish appearance, nervous energy, and charm all hid the fact that he was a Time Lord of great age, compassion, and experience. This Doctor greatly abhorred violence and often hesitated about taking matters into his own hands. For the first time, indecision weighed seriously on the character, and it had its consequences - yet this Doctor was also one of the most courageous of his incarnations. He was willing to take chances with companions like Turlough and Kamelion, who were originally threats, even as he pretended to be unaware of it at first in order to grant his companion the opportunity to do the right thing. He was also willing to make enormous personal sacrifices (Mawdryn Undead) simply to keep his word and liberate others from suffering. It was perhaps the awful realisation that his very existence begat violence and the weight of companion Adric's death on his conscience, and perhaps Tegan's near emotional breakdown as well, that led him to sacrifice his own existence to save his last companion, Peri. In an episode of Doctor Who Confidential, Steven Moffat said that "this Doctor takes the emphasis off the eccentricities and turns it into a pained heroism of a man who is so much better than the universe he is trying to save but cannot bear to let it stand."

My favourite Doctor of them all. A brilliant selection of clips ad a great description of him too. He is the main reason I want a multi Doctor story again though I'm probably being greedy after already getting Time Crash

I thought Five was great, and all the more admirable because of the giant task of filling Tom Bakers shoes. Nobody thought he could do it and he proved everyone wrong. Some of his stories are the very best and easily a top 5 Doctor for me

My cousin about a month ago convinced me to watch Caves and I fell in love with it and Five. Such a great Doctor that I will eventually get around to watching more of I hope.

You really should. Five, particularly in his last season, had some absolutely brilliant stories and was a fantastic Doctor. He will always be my favourite

The 5th was the last doctor of the classic series I got to watch in 'real time' due to a move abroad. I have to admit I was pretty much sold on Peter Davison before he took on the role as a result of 'All Creatures' so the transition from TB was pretty effortless. A re- run of his tenure always goes well in this household and after 10..3 and 2 he is one of my more favoured incarnations.

Sarah Jane Smith: No.The universe has to move forward. Pain and loss, they define us as much as happiness or love. Whether it's a world, or a relationship. Everything has its time. And everything ends.

A great Doctor, especially in making his incarnation so drastically different from the fourth. The fifth is really the ultimate gentleman, and his exasperation at lots of things seemed to be his most Doctor-ly tendency besides the more obvious cricket balling and coin flipping. I definitely liked the more radical out-there stories of his run, forget what they say about production values.

Today, the Kaled race is ended, consumed in a fire of war. But, from its ashes will rise a new race. The supreme creature. The ultimate conqueror of the universe. The Dalek!
