It would be good to see a different dynamic between the Doctor and companion...not to mention giving him less reason to keep popping back to Earth

I'd like an alien too - even non-humanoid might be good

It would be good, but very doubtful, I think the basic to a successful story on earth (at least) is having a companion who can blend in, a non humaniod would have to land during festivals and parades etc

I can remember reading that a dalek was once considered for a companion Now THAT would have been cool...albeit slightly disconcerting

Interesting. The "human-factor" Daleks of Evil of the Daleks could have been feasible, but it would have certainly been different.

Interesting... I imagine it to be like a Dalek gone slightly wrong and knowing its traditional dalek purpose but The Doc kind of teaching it and telling it off etc

I imagine it to be like a Dalek gone slightly wrong and knowing its traditional dalek purpose but The Doc kind of teaching it and telling it off etc Telling it off I suppose they kind of touched on the concept in VOD. How weird was it to hear a dalek asking if someone wanted a cup of tea?

It also figured in the classic stories Power of the Daleks and Evil of the Daleks. In Power, it's a pretence very similar to VOD (I believe Mark Gatiss acknowledged the influence) whereas in Evil, three Daleks were created with the "human factor", and they decided the Doctor was their friend. There's one scene of them playing a game with him.

I imagine a Dalek companion would be a nightmare to film with long term. Id hate to see one properly domesticated anyway

She could play any character, but I think Lacey Turner (Stacey in EastEnders) would make a great companion. Such a great and versatile actress and I think she would work well with Matt Smith too

Really? Id worry about casting her, maybe if she was altered and was an alien...otherwise id look at her and think whys stacey in the tardis?
I did that with one of the women in Being Human when she went over to casualty, really weird

I think someone from a couple of centuries ago, or someone from another world is what we need now. I know the Doctor likes this planet but the chances of him always taking someone from present day Earth is odd to me. The same as him constantly visiting this time too

Or even further back. I loved the "primitive" aspect with Leela, and that could work very well with a medieval or earlier companion.

I really like the idea of a companion from a time in the past. All the companions that I have seen are from modern day. It would be interesting to see someone who didn't know about televisions and cell phones etc.

That's what I am hoping for too. Someone like Victoria. Or someone like Leela who is human, but from another planet.

Leela was actually a terrestrial human - descended from colonists who'd devolved into savages. In Talons of Weng Chiang, the Doctor talks about showing her how her ancestors lived. None of which makes the basic point any less valid

That's actually a really good thought!!!! I agree although I absolutely love amy and rory I think it will be good to see river actually travel with the doctor rather than the odd story here and there
