My absolute dream guest writer/director is actually reasonably possible: Edgar Wright. His writing/direction for Scott Pilgrim was awesome and he showed with Shaun of the Dead a brilliant ability to be serious AND funny when the time calls for it. Would love a comedy driven episode, and he would be the perfect person for it. Also, as his films tend to deal with different genres being lovingly aped, he would be a perfect fit for a genre specific Who akin to Talons etc. Visually, it could be brilliant also. He has said in an interview he would love to do it. Make it happen, Moff!

Incidentally (and I think the least likely of any of the ones we've mentioned) - wouldn't it be nice to see RTD pen another one! I'd love to see his writing for MS and Amy Smiley

I'm amazed I haven't thought of this before (and apologies if it is in the other threads) but what about J.K.Rowling. The darkness of the later Harry Potter books shows she can do 'adult-family' drama. I'd love to see what that imagination can come up with in the Whoniverse Smiley

RTD tried to get her for series 4 if I remember rightly, but she was 'too busy' or something.

Now you mention it, I think you are right. She was mentioned in dispatches. Perhaps 'too busy' was a euphemism for 'No thanks, Doctor Who isn't my bag baby.'

Seriously, they asked JK Rowling? How awesome would it have been if she had said yes! I bet they will get her in the end

I'm not a great fan of comedy writers turning their hand to sci-fi (Simon Nye and Richard Curtis spring to mind) but I can't help thinking Ben Elton would do a real job for Nu-Who

I generally agree with much of what you say, but I have to leave you alone on this one. I'm not a big fan of most of his stuff and I find him as a person very unlikeable

I will say, he is bottom of a very long list of 'famous' writers I would love to see (more for interest value than any great admiration of him) and if he doesn't do it then I won't lose any sleep. I still think my favourite would be P.J.Hammond followed by J.K Rowling

I don't know whether he's written for TV at all, but I'd love a story by Iain Banks (or Iain M Banks, his cunning alias when he writes SF).  He has the kind of boundless imagination that would suit DW well.

Iain Banks is a great call Smiley I have another slightly off beam one for you - would love to see Steven Polyakoff given a shot - an awesome writer and he would bring real depth (not a sci-fi writer though)

I'm sure Poliakoff could do a great character-driven story.

I'm digging this up because I just read Jasper Fforde's novel 'The Eyre Affair' & whilst reading it I thought he might be able to pull off writing for DW. This was not least because his leading lady, Thursday Next, has a father who worked for the ChronoGuard (a kind of Time Agency) & is now a renegade who lives outside of normal time - having only read this first book so far I don't know what else he gets up to but in this one he is correcting errors in history (the work of revisionists) as well as trying to evade his pursuers. I also love the way he has real people interact with fictional characters.

First time I've read a new (to me) author & had one of those 'ooh you might be able to write Who' moments - shows how big a part of my life this show has become in the last year or so I guess!  Smiley

That sounds right up my street - when I start to read for pleasure again I will make sure to check that out.

I imagine folk are probably queuing up to write for Who these days.

With that said, perhaps the addition of legends like Jane Espenson on Torchwood will entice some of the cream of the US crop to offer their services?
Espenson herself, Ronald D Moore, David Fury etc - as long as (and sorry to chuck in a negative here) Helen Raynor isn't allowed to destroy another 2 parter I'd be fine with who they use.

I think I'd also love to see what RTD did with a stand alone ep - even if he does still think the toclafane was a good finale!  Tongue
