This story started a series of hints in the last two classic series that there's something odd about the Doctor.  This was meant to be an ongoing thing, apparently, but they hadn't got very far before the show was cancelled, and it was developed in the later novels into the legend of the Other.  Here, the Doctor's Freudian slip when he's explaining the Hand suggests he was a contemporary of Omega and Rassillon, while in Silver Nemesis, Lady Peinforte's threat to reveal who the Doctor really is seems to scare him.

This has an obvious parallel with what's going on in the show now (the first question thing) and I wonder if it's consciously linked in Moff's mind.

I get where you are coming from, but I think it might be a bit too subtle to be something Moff has done purposely. That's not to say you are wrong, but it just strikes me that Moff would make more of a deal of it if it were the case. It's an awesome idea though and if it turned out to be right I think that would be great.

I'd never thought of that. That would be a very cool link. Sorting of bringing the classics closer to the new series and continuing the stories. Sort of. I like it. I hope you are right now Nyki. You've got my hopes up Tongue

It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest to find out that Moff had it in mind while writing. He does like his tie-ins.

Now and then, every once in a very long while, every day in a million days, when the wind stands fair and The Doctor comes to call, everybody lives.

the Doctor's Freudian slip when he's explaining the Hand

I'm probably just being a bit dense, but what do you mean? I don't remember anything about this. At least, I don't think I do.

The Doctor's telling Ace about what the Hand of Omega is, and he comments "And didn't we have trouble with the prototype."  Ace queries "We?" and the Doctor looks a little alarmed and quickly corrects it to "They."

Oh right. I didn't pick up on that. That's actually quite interesting. I don't know anything about 'The Other' though so I don't know where it could lead, but it would be interesting if they picked it up in the new series. I love when they reference the classic series, even when I don't know much about it.

The main downside to this though is that it would take quite a bit of explaining and continuity linking for people who have no idea about the plot or who aren't familiar with the classics

I'm not suggesting Moff's going to literally resurrect the Other, but I suspect he might be thinking about that as a parallel to what he's doing.
